This Ukrainian version of "St. Nicholas Worker of Miracles" is taken from an 18th - 19th century icon. Among thousands of saints of the Orthodox church, this bishop is represented in painting perhaps the most often. In the 3rd-4th century, St. Nicholas was the bishop of the town Mira in Litia, and he was famous for his acts of kindness. Even in his lifetime he was regarded as the patron of children, travelers, and the poor. In the icon shown above, St. Nicholas holds a book in his left hand and offers a blessing gesture with his right hand. Our Lady is picture above his arm while Christ is to the left. The legend says that Our Lady and Christ took part in the bishop's ordination, and that is why they are represented in his portrait icons. Mary hands St. Nicholas an omophorion and Jesus hands him a gospel. On the bishop's gown are scenes of the Annunciation, Christmas, and Visitation. On the gospel cover is the Crucifixion and four evangelists.
